MEMO: March 10th, 2012

Give kids a smile was a great success

The final numbers have come in and they are incredible! The "Give Kids a Smile" (GKAS) sealant clinic held February 4th at the Southwestern Dental hygiene school reached over 280 children! All told the volunteers did over $26,910 worth of sealants and fluoride varnish.

Preventing tooth decay and promoting good oral Heath goes a long with good overall health. Tooth decay is the most chronic health disease affecting children and we can help them! It has been proven that children with cavities do not study as well due to their dental Heath. Success in life starts in school and giving kids a smile helps ensure a better future.

The GKAS program was a cooperative effort on the parts of the San Diego County Dental Society, the San Diego County Dental Hygienist's Society , First Five, the Southwestern Dental Hygiene Program, San Diego County Smiles Program, and County of San Diego Dental Health Initiative/Share the Care.

You could feel the energy in the room as everyone was ready to jump in and help out where ever they could. The volunteers were great. As soon as a child's care was completed, there were people cleaning up and quickly and setting up for the next patient to get as many children seen as possible. To see people who were complete strangers at the beginning of the day working together to help others was very rewarding and you couldn't help but feel like you were part of something great!

The kids all seemed to be having a good time learning how to care for their teeth, and their parents were happy to be able to get the sealants that their children needed. We were fortunate to be able to give a little of our time to help these kids and their families and it is hard to say who benefited more them or us.

Our office looks forward to the next event and encourages anyone who would like to to step forward and donate their time and talents to any worthy cause to go ahead and do so. What you can learn from others is incredible but you need to be there to give as well as receive.

We encourage each of you to find a way to give something of yourself. No matter how small or insignificant it may seem to you, it is often super meaningful to others.
