Dentistry for Children: 6 Important Questions Answered.

Dentistry for ChildrenMost parents start thinking about their children's teeth when they first begin teething because of the drama typically associated with this time in their lives. Taking the time and making the investment in caring for your children's teeth early will pay off in spades for the rest of their lives.

  1. When should I start bringing them in? The rule of thumb for when to first provide dentistry for children is "first visit by first birthday". You should ideally bring your baby in to see the dentist when his or her first tooth erupts around 6 months following birth, and absolutely no later than their first birthday.
  2. Why so early? Dental issues can begin very early in life, particularly once children begin consuming anything other than their mother's milk. additionally, it is important to get your child accustomed to going in to see the dentist and sitting in the dental chair early when the visit involves a simple examination by the dentist.
  3. What happens in the first visit? The first visit is typically very easy and brief. Your dentist will examine the health of your child's teeth, and make sure their bite fits together well. The dentist will encourage your child to take good care of their teeth and should work to make your child comfortable in the chair and under his/her care. Early dentistry for children is critical.
  4. How much should I care about my children's baby teeth? Some adults question the need to spend much time caring for baby teeth since this first set will eventually fall out. We encourage parents to recognize how difficult it is to change old habits and how much easier it is setting good ones as early in life as possible. Additionally, you want your child to have healthy looking teeth even when they are little to help ensure positive self esteem. Kids with dark or rotting teeth know they look unhealthy and feel bad about themselves.
  5. How should I care for my Children's teeth? Check with your family dentist regarding up to date methods for pediatric teeth cleaning. Generally speaking, have them brush twice daily with a small amount of toothpaste, and begin flossing when neigboring teeth begin to touch. Have children younger than 2 years old brush with water rather than toothpaste.
  6. Is there a legal obligation for kids to visit the dentist? Yes, California state law requires that your child has his/her first dental check-up by the end of May of their Kindergarten year in public school.

It's not that difficult to take care of your children's teeth, you just need to pay attention and start early. Take a look at our Kindergarten check-up service by clicking the button below:
