Carlsbad Dentist Recommends Brushing Twice per Day

Most of us believe in brushing our teeth, but why should we do it more than once a day? If I were to brush my teeth once per day, say right before going to bed at night, then I will have removed the day’s deposits and my teeth will be ready for the morning when I get up, right? Actually, this is not correct. Following are five key reasons why your Carlsbad dentist recommends brushing twice per day.
- Removal of plaque and food debris that, when left alone, decay your teeth causing painful and destructive cavities which must then be filled by your dentist.
- Tooth protecting Fluoride is generally one of the key ingredients in most toothpastes, and provides a first line of defense against tooth decay. Every time you brush, you are removing food particles which, if left on your teeth, will produce enamel eating acid that leads to erosion and ultimately cavities. At the same time, every time you brush you add a layer of Fluoride on your teeth which helps resist tooth erosion from this bacteria.
- Bad breath is best fought by regular brushing of your teeth and tongue twice per day. Since mouth cleansing saliva production is reduced at night, any bacteria remaining in your mouth after brushing (some is always present) is left alone to decay your teeth. Not brushing in the morning means this bacteria remains on your teeth doing damage for twice as long as it really needs to
- 70% Increased risk of cardiovascular and other diseases. Believe it or not, this can result from not brushing twice per day, according to a new large population-based study (Scottish Health Survey). Scientists found a strong association between poor oral hygiene routines suggesting inflammation as a possible link between oral and heart health. The possibility should be enough, the authors noted, to suggest that, "doctors should be alert to the possible oral source of an increase inflammatory burden." And it might just be another reason for people to brush more often.
- Reduction in gum disease results when brushing your teeth twice a day. Gum disease generates bacteria that can get into your bloodstream to potentially lead to diabetes, osteoporosis, and premature or low birth weight babies, in addition to cardiovascular disease already mentioned.
Remember to bolster your twice-daily bacteria fighting tooth brushing with once-daily flossing as well since it is crucial in helping to remove particles that may be inaccessible by your brush. While modern cosmetic dentistry can indeed work wonders on your smile, it’s important to keep your options open by taking good care of your teeth which is why your Carlsbad dentist recommends brushing twice per day.
